Suggestions on this story?

Hey everyone! I started writing this but I got stuck. Any suggestions how to pick it up again? It's supposed to be Civil War, girl from the south joins the Union army kind of thing.


Turning Blue
            Fireflies dance over the grass and large pond in the warm summer night outside the southern mansion. A warm breeze makes the branches of the weeping willow sway and spreads the sweet scents of roses and daffodils throughout the property and down the country road. Laughter and music floods the air and silhouettes dance in the windows. Inside is a grand party, ladies in flowing ball gowns, old men in tidy black suits, young men in dashing gray uniforms, and children in their Sunday bests. An elegant chandelier hangs above a busy marble dance floor, the walls are decked with portraits of gentlemen and ladies of the past and present accompanied by golden statuettes and ornate vases. The atmosphere was light and happy with champagne, wine, and whiskey and the promise of bright military careers for the young men about to depart for the war.
            In the corner of the room next to a window stands a young woman whose extravagant gown blends into the red velvet curtains. Her long chestnut hair is swooped up into a loose bun, and nestled in it are small silk flowers of crimson and gray to match the embroidery of her bodice. Her sweet brown eyes gazed wistfully out the window towards the little white swing under the willow swinging with the breeze. “Charlotte, please come join us!” Colonel Beauregard waved his daughter to come to him with a white gloved hand.

            With the colonel was conversing with two other people, a woman as old as old as him and a young man, perhaps a few years older than Charlotte. He was tall with raven hair that went down to his shoulders. Charlotte left her solitary position by the window and joined her father and his guests. “Charlotte, this is

  1. If you want her to join the Union, you'll most likely need her to agree with it about the war. While the two main goal of the Union was to show federal dominance, the possibility of abolishing slavery would be a much more emotional and dramatic reason for her to join. As such, you can have Charlotte meet someone at the party who teaches her about this abolitionist viewpoint that she'll eventually adopt. That person could be one of the young soldiers who disagrees with slavery but still wants to fight to defend his home.
