Disappearing Moons and the End of the World

While we were outside on Monday, waiting for and watching the Blood Moon, some of my friends and I began talking about what people back in ancient civilization might have thought if they had seen a lunar eclipse.  Looking up and seeing the moon slowly being covered up by an unseen entity, swallowed whole by the night itself, it's easy to see how individuals back before the explanation of science might have blamed the Gods for such an occurrence.  We were sitting there, staring up at the disappearing moon, and talking about how incredibly terrifying it must have been.  Without knowing the scientific basis of the eclipse, it really does look like the world as we know it must be ending.  Vanishing moons?  Further, the moon being painted the color of blood?  The end is surely here.  One of my friends mentioned how, back in those times, there must have been someone who aspired to be the God or the entity who was responsible for such an act.  A young boy who wanted to grow up to one day cover the moon.  That was certainly interesting.  My other friend talked about the sacrifices that must have taken place on those nights.  Straight up human sacrifice to appease the Gods and convince Them to give us our Moon back.  I personally thought that the red moon looked a lot like a giant Mars.  Perhaps it was a premonition for the beginning of wars, a sign for the upcoming onslaught of forces.
