I've been thinking about the purpose of art in general and our reactions to it.
It seems like there are some art forms--painting, photography, music, for example--in which the effect on the viewer/listener is immediate, or almost immediate. It doesn't take long to break into tears after looking at a beautiful landscape or listening to a beautiful song. However, with literature, it seems to be different. We read stories and they may not make sense at first, but then we re-read and critically analyze those stories and their meaning gradually comes out. It seems like a weird line to draw, because things get fuzzy. Poetry often takes multiple readings to "get" the meaning, but music's effect seems pretty immediate in most cases, but poetry and music are pretty closely related.
I don't know, any thoughts?
