In the Mind of a Writer

Hey all,

So I don't have a story or experience I could elaborate into a story. Instead, I want to talk about how much trouble I had trying to come up with an idea for the first writing assignment. First off, I went to watch my girlfriend run her first marathon at the P.F. Chang's marathon and spent time watching hundreds of runners pass by. Using this as my observation, I had multiple ideas flood my brain. But putting thoughts to paper is another story I don't want to go into. As a writer we expect to see a perfect product, because if it isn't perfect us, then how is it going to be perfect for the reader? Anyways, I must have erased what I had about ten times before I had a finished product I was satisfied with. It seemed to flow well and it made sense.
After class today, I wish I could have incorporated more concrete details and specific details about where I was on the course. I wanted to go into the minds of the runners and try to understand what they were thinking. It takes a lot for someone to run 26.2 miles and to be able to convey their thoughts would have been perfect. But for anyone who has trouble starting or getting their idea out, just go for it. No one's writing is perfect. Be one of those people who fills their trash can with crumpled up papers. I have been and it feels great because if I went with my first draft all the time, it would be pretty bad to say the least. So let's have a good year and I can't wait to read what you stories you have written!

  1. I definitely think that a problem for most writers is that pesky perfectionist mentality. Its always hard to write something down and see that it's not just how you want it, but this is something everyone really has to get through if they love writing enough and want to continue. I like how you grasped those thoughts that all writers have at some point in their lives, some more than others, in this post.
